For nearly 25 years, the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District has coordinated the Agriculture Education Day at the Oxford County Fair. Each year we attempted to bring something new to the program and have worked diligently in most recent years to satisfy the “Learning Results” requirements. This program has brought components that focus on science, math and social studies for the students. Home schooled children will be attending. The fair will be passing out bags to all the children with many educational tools and there are about 80 educational booths.
Jim Chandler was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District in 2010 for his amazing list of contributions to environmental education, including his work to bring the Canon Envirothon to Maine. The Envirothon is a state and nationwide natural resource problem-solving competition for grades 9-12. Students compete outdoors in five natural resource areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current national environmental issue. In 1989 the Maine Agricultural Fair Association awarded Jim with a Special Education Award for the development of Agriculture Education Day at the Oxford County Fair. Jim continues to work as a Project Learning Tree Facilitator and was recognized in 2007 as a Project Learning Tree Outstanding Educator, one of 5 chosen in the nation.
